On the initiative of Burkard Held, the Würzburg Association for Improvement, together with the Bavarian Ministry of Culture, donated a memorial on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the discovery of X-rays. After a competition, the design was entrusted to the first winner, the metal sculptor Norbert Kleinlein from Volkach. The production was carried out by the coppersmith Heilmann (Volkach). The inauguration ceremony took place on November 8, 1970 with a large number of participants. Among other things, the daughter of Röntgen, Ms. Donges-Röntgen, was present in person.
