In 1970, the development of the Bärwalde opencast mine began and with it the devastation of the towns of Merzdorf, Schöpstal and the Klitten district of Jasua.
The Boxberg and Schwarze Pumpe power plants were supplied with 185 million tons of lignite from 1976 to 1992.
After the closure, the Lausitzer und Mitteldeutsche Bergbauverwaltungsgesellschaft mbH (LMBV) began to clean up the remaining opencast mine.
