The "Schipfe" is one of the oldest districts in the city of Zurich and runs beneath the Lindenhof.
The name "Schipfe" derives from shipping and means "pushing" (to push) boats to the shore and back into the water.
In the Middle Ages, the "Schipfe" was a transshipment point for important goods; from the 16th century onward, it became the site of the silk industry, bathhouses, and shipbuilding.
To this day, the "Schipfe" remains a craftsmen's alley, an idyllic place to linger, shop, and dine.
