An absolutely recommended insider tip. The Hohenstein is a high stone, a steeply rising cliff made of dolomite - a fossilized coral reef from the Middle Devonian around 390 million years ago, when giant amphibians crawled through primeval forests in Germany. Rain and wind have carved the old reef out of the rugged steep slope of the Wupper.

The towering dolomite rock and the view from there over Barmen were once considered a tourist attraction. The steep slope with the intersection of two footpaths remained undeveloped. Garden architect Arthur Stüting designed it around 1900 into a small green area (0.45 hectares). The Hohenstein is now protected as a natural monument. Since 2008, park visitors have been able to sit in the sun again thanks to a generous clearing and enjoy the unobstructed view of the rock and the Wuppertal.
