Since 1060/1072 a chapel with its own baptismal and burial rights has been documented in Erbach, which belonged to the parish of Eltville until 1250. Then Erbach became an independent parish and the chapel became a parish church. Since 1258 Mark is attested as their patron saint. Indulgence certificates from 1281, 1304 and 1324 point to a structural expansion of the original chapel, which was converted into a hall church.

St. Mark's Parish Church - Erbach/Odw. 🚴‍♂️

St. Mark's Parish Church stands directly on the main street on a terraced embankment between the western entrance to the town, diagonally opposite Reinhartshausen Castle, and the market square.

Coming from Hattenheim to Erbach, you can see the slender steeple of the listed Catholic parish church from afar. It was built towards the end of the 16th century as a three-aisled hall church and expanded in the 18th century. In the church cemetery, there is a crucifixion group by the Mainz sculptor Hans Backoffen. 🚴‍♂️
