The church building was built during the First World War in 1917 according to plans by the architect Hans Prutscher with the help of Russian prisoners of war as an emergency Catholic church. Because of this, and because of the borrowings from north-eastern European styles, the church was always popularly known as the Russian Church. It was consecrated as Christ the King Church in 1922.
