High Junk Peak is easily accessible by public transportation. A common starting point for hikers is the Ng Fai Tin bus stop. Several bus routes and minibuses serve this area, connecting it to major transport hubs in Hong Kong. Planning your route in advance using a local transport app is recommended.
While there isn't extensive dedicated parking directly at all trailheads for High Junk Peak, limited parking may be available at certain access points within Clear Water Bay Country Park. However, these spots can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and public holidays. Public transport is generally the most convenient option.
The High Junk Peak Country Trail itself offers sections that are moderately easy to moderate, making it accessible for those with some hiking experience. However, reaching the actual summit involves a steep, rocky, and sometimes treacherous off-trail scramble that may require using hands for climbing. For families or beginners, it's advisable to enjoy the country trail without attempting the challenging summit ascent. There are options to bypass the most difficult climb.
High Junk Peak is generally considered more challenging than Dragon's Back, particularly if you aim to reach the summit. While Dragon's Back offers a relatively gentle ridge walk with stunning views, High Junk Peak's summit push involves a significant scramble over uneven, rocky terrain. It's often grouped with Sharp Peak and Castle Peak as one of Hong Kong's "Three Sharp Peaks" due to its demanding nature.
Given the varied terrain, including potential scrambles, sturdy hiking footwear with good grip is essential. Dress in layers suitable for the weather, as temperatures can vary. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a first-aid kit. If attempting the summit, gloves can be helpful for the rocky sections.
While the direct ascent to High Junk Peak's summit and back is common, there are various routes within the Clear Water Bay Country Park that can be combined to form loop trails or longer point-to-point hikes. Hikers often integrate the High Junk Peak Country Trail with paths leading to places like Po Toi O or Tin Hau Temple in Joss House Bay, allowing for diverse experiences and different starting/ending points.
Directly at the trailheads, amenities are limited. However, if you conclude your hike at the traditional fishing village of Po Toi O, you'll find seafood restaurants offering a culinary reward. For more extensive options, the nearby areas of Clear Water Bay and Tseung Kwan O offer a wider range of cafes, restaurants, and accommodation choices.
Beyond the distinctive conical peak itself, hikers will encounter large boulders near the summit that are popular spots for photographs. The trail also offers expansive views of volcanic rock formations characteristic of Hong Kong's geology. Historically, the trail can lead to the ancient Tin Hau Temple in Joss House Bay, dating back to 1266, which features a significant rock inscription from 1274.
The total hiking time for High Junk Peak can vary significantly depending on your chosen route, fitness level, and whether you attempt the summit. A typical hike covering the main country trail and including the summit ascent might take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours. Less experienced hikers opting to bypass the summit will complete it faster, while those exploring longer loop options will take more time.
Dogs are generally permitted on country park trails in Hong Kong, including those around High Junk Peak, provided they are kept on a leash and owners clean up after them. However, the challenging, rocky, and steep sections, especially near the summit, might be difficult or unsafe for some dogs, particularly smaller breeds or those not accustomed to scrambling.
While the 360-degree panoramic views from the narrow summit are unparalleled, excellent viewpoints can also be found along the High Junk Peak Country Trail. As you ascend, various spots offer sweeping vistas of Clear Water Bay, Port Shelter, and the surrounding islands. The large boulders near the peak also provide great vantage points for photography and enjoying the scenery without needing to tackle the final, most challenging scramble to the very top.
