During the Civil War era, the army decided to utilize that location to protect the San Francisco area, employing the Batteries for this purpose. The term "Batteries" signifies actions such as fighting, knocking down, or beating. If you plan to camp you need to make an adavnced reservation to do so.

This overlook is above a cozy stretch of white sand that might be one of the most romantic beaches in the Bay area, as it can only be reached by taking a boat, or by traveling by ferry to Angel Island and hiking/biking across to the other side, offering a spectacular panoramic view of the San Francisco skyline with the Bay bridge and the Golden Gate.
