Weert already had a chapel, which was incorporated in 1787 as a choir in a brick church.
In 1859 the church was enlarged according to a design by Joseph Schadde. The nave was extended and a choir and a transept were built. Sacristies were also added. In 1875 the tower was demolished and a new one built according to a design by Léonard Blomme. The windows were renewed in 1929.
The church was deconsecrated in 2021.

Artist Koen Nelissen will turn the deconsecrated church building into a museum and an arts center.

"There will be changing exhibitions, with work by the artist himself, and also by national and international artists with mainly educational topics such as faith, environment, war, refugees. In addition, there will also be classical concerts for small groups. Weert is often visited by walkers and cyclists. It is interesting to be able to open the church in this way."

Weert has been an independent parish since 1783. Weert used to depend on Temse.
An older chapel was replaced in 1787 by an austere brick church.
In the 19th century, the church was greatly enlarged for decades. In the period from 1859 to 1875, the church and its surroundings were regularly a construction site.
The last major major works took place after storm damage in 1927.
In 1929 the windows of the nave and transept were renewed and fitted with white stone tracery.
Sint Anna is the landmark in the meadow landscape.
