Porta Venezia, the city gate, is actually the sixth of the six city gates that Milan once had. During the Napoleonic era in Milan (1796-1815) the gate was called Porta Riconoscenza, for the Milanese Porta Renza. After this period, until 1860 the gate was called Porta Orientale, the eastern gate, because the gate was located in the east of the city and provided access to the road that led to Gorgonzola, east of Milan.
