What makes the German North Sea coast special are not only the islands off the coast, but also the Wadden Sea. Salt marshes, dunes, beaches, mudflats, and geest cliffs: together, they form the unique habitat of the Wadden Sea, which is constantly changing, sometimes wet, sometimes dry, depending on the tides. The Wadden Sea is home to specially adapted creatures.

The Lower Saxony Wadden Sea Biosphere Region has protected this unique landscape since 1992. It stretches along the Lower Saxony North Sea coast, from the mouth of the Elbe near Cuxhaven to the Dutch border.
