The city wall in Rothenburg runs around the entire city. The route from Klingentor to Spitaltor is completely accessible. On the side facing the valley it is only provided with a battlement along the hospital district, the so-called Kappenzipfel, between Stöberleinsturm and Kohlturm.

46 towers can be found in the old town of Rothenburg. Most are along the city walls, at the six gates into the city and along the fortifications. Within the old town are the towers of the first city wall, the town hall tower and the towers of St. Jakob. Most of the Tower Trail runs along the city wall, while a small section goes around it.
