The historic harbor Tönning is considered to be the most beautiful harbor on the west coast because of its partly 100 years old buildings. One example is the canal packing house from 1783, where goods were stored and packed in the 18th and 19th century at the time of the Eider Canal.

At Christmas time in December, the monumental building is transformed into the longest Christmas calendar in the world!
The Tönningen landmark has been in the Guinness Book of Records with this record since 1997.
On the Advent weekends, the well-known and popular Christmas market takes place inside the building.

In 1783, three packing houses were built at the same time in Tönning, Kiel-Holtenau and Rendsburg - at the same time as the completion of the Eider Canal, which connected the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. From 1784, these packhouses were to serve as goods transshipment points and storage areas along the new Schleswig-Holstein Canal (Eider Canal). At that time, the Tönninger Packhaus was one of the largest storage buildings on the coast. An identical storage facility still stands today on the Baltic Sea in Kiel Holtenau.
