Possibly built some time around 950, St Bega's Church is a gorgeous building on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake. It was renovated at some point in the mid-nineteenth century.

Bega was an Irish Chieftain's daughter who fled to Cumbria to escape an arranged marriage. She made he way from St Bees, possibly via Bassenthwaite to Northumbria.

The church is the end point for the long-distance walk St Bega's Way and start point for its sequel: St Bega's Way Back.

The church itself is situated in a tranquil meadow at an elevation of approximately 74 meters above sea level, making the immediate area relatively flat and easy to navigate. Accessing the church often involves walking along lakeside paths or quiet country lanes, which are generally considered easy to moderate. If you're undertaking the St Bega's Way, the overall difficulty will depend on the specific sections of the 36-mile route you choose to tackle, as it traverses varied Lake District terrain.

Are there any notable landmarks or viewpoints near St Bega's Church?

The church itself, with its Norman elements and ancient stonework, is a significant landmark.

What are the parking options at St Bega's Church, and how busy do they get?

While parking is available near St Bega's Church, it can be quite limited, especially during peak seasons or busy times. Visitors often find that arriving earlier in the day is advisable to secure a spot. The remote location means there isn't extensive overflow parking, so planning your visit with this in mind is recommended.

Is public transport available to St Bega's Church?

Direct public transport to St Bega's Church is not readily available due to its remote lakeside location. Most visitors arrive by car, bicycle, or as part of a longer walk or hike.
