The Gänsepeter Fountain was created in 1901 by the architect Paul Lauser, the sculptor Theodor Bausch, and the bronze caster Hugo Pelargus.

The fountain at the foot of the Hasenberg hill commemorates the fact that, in earlier times, a large number of geese from the surrounding villages were driven to the market in Stuttgart shortly before St. Martin's Day (November 11). It was financed equally by the city of Stuttgart and private donors and was inaugurated on St. Martin's Day in 1901.

According to the inscription at the base, the sculpture was sculpted by Theodor Bausch. He was a professor at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts and left behind several works in Stuttgart that are still extant today. He contributed to the tomb of chocolate manufacturer Moser in the Pragfriedhof Cemetery, and he is credited with the coats of arms on the building of the State Trade Office, today's House of Industry. He also created one of the four large figures on the portico of the State Theater.
