    Vandring

Lovely Seat (675m) was originally known as Lunasett. It is the highest point of Abbotside Common, the high ground separating Swaledale from Wensleydale. There is a cairn atop and a stone chair (is this is why it's called Lovely Seat?): there are terrific views of the Yorkshire Peaks from here to the south.

    Vandring

Lovely Seat is a UK designated Nuttall at 675 metres and not that far from Cliff Gate Road, where there is a small parking space. I wish I could say something about the views, but I didn't see anything today.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

What is the origin of the name 'Lovely Seat' and its original name?

The fell was originally known as Lunasett, a name derived from an old Norse dialect meaning "moon pasture." Mapmakers in the 20th century are believed to have changed the name to "Lovely Seat," possibly inspired by the distinctive stone-built chair found at the summit. Locals from Abbotside still occasionally use the original name.

Are there any easy or family-friendly hiking routes to Lovely Seat Summit Cairn?

While the terrain can be wild and unpathed, the most common approach is from the top of Buttertubs Pass. This route is generally considered more accessible than direct ascents from the valley. For families, it's important to note that the overall experience is a fell walk, which can be challenging due to remote moorland conditions and potentially boggy ground. There are no specifically designated 'easy' routes, but starting from the pass shortens the overall distance and elevation gain compared to valley starts.

Is Lovely Seat Summit Cairn suitable for dogs?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails around Lovely Seat Summit Cairn. However, as it's located within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and often involves walking across open moorland, it's crucial to keep dogs under close control, especially during lambing season (typically March to July), to protect livestock and ground-nesting birds. Always follow the Countryside Code.

What are the parking options for visiting Lovely Seat Summit Cairn?

There is a small parking space available near Cliff Gate Road, which serves as a starting point for some ascents. Many hikers also begin their walk from the top of Buttertubs Pass, where limited roadside parking may be available. Due to the remote nature of the area, parking can be scarce, particularly during peak times, so arriving early is advisable.

What should I wear or bring when hiking to Lovely Seat Summit Cairn, especially in varied conditions?

Given the exposed moorland environment, it's essential to be prepared for all weather conditions, even in summer. Hikers should wear sturdy waterproof boots, layered clothing (including waterproof and windproof outer layers), and carry a map, compass (or GPS device), and sufficient food and water. Navigation can be challenging in poor visibility, so appropriate gear and skills are crucial.

How long does it typically take to hike to Lovely Seat Summit Cairn?

The duration of the hike depends significantly on the starting point and route chosen. An ascent from the top of Buttertubs Pass, often combined with Great Shunner Fell, can take several hours. If starting from Hawes or Thwaite and incorporating the Pennine Way, the overall trek will be considerably longer. It's best to plan for a half to full-day excursion, depending on your fitness level and desired pace.

Are there any public transport options to reach Lovely Seat Summit Cairn?

Public transport options directly to the immediate vicinity of Lovely Seat Summit Cairn are very limited due to its remote location. The nearest towns with more regular bus services are Hawes and Thwaite. From these towns, you would typically need to arrange a taxi or embark on a much longer hike to reach the starting points for the ascent, such as Buttertubs Pass.

What unique geological features can be observed around Lovely Seat Summit Cairn?

Lovely Seat is part of the high ground separating Wensleydale from Swaledale, characterized by its rounded, grassy fell landscape typical of the Yorkshire Dales. While not known for dramatic rock formations, the area's geology is primarily carboniferous limestone, which underlies the peat and grass. Approximately 300 meters west of the summit, hikers can observe a series of smaller stone cairns, which are man-made features but add to the ancient, rugged character of the landscape.

How does Lovely Seat Summit Cairn compare in difficulty to nearby Great Shunner Fell?

Lovely Seat is often ascended in conjunction with Great Shunner Fell, with the latter typically climbed first from Hawes or Thwaite using the Pennine Way. While both are fell walks across moorland, Great Shunner Fell is a higher peak (716m) and part of the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, often involving a longer and more sustained ascent. Lovely Seat, at 675m, is generally considered a slightly less arduous addition when approached from Buttertubs Pass after Great Shunner Fell, but still presents a challenging moorland hike.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options close to Lovely Seat Summit Cairn?

Lovely Seat Summit Cairn is in a remote area, so there are no immediate amenities at the summit or its direct base. The nearest facilities, including cafes, pubs, and accommodation, can be found in the nearby market town of Hawes (approximately five kilometers south) or in the village of Thwaite, both of which serve as popular starting points or bases for exploring the wider Yorkshire Dales.

What are the winter conditions like at Lovely Seat Summit Cairn?

Winter conditions at Lovely Seat Summit Cairn can be severe and challenging. The exposed moorland is prone to strong winds, heavy rain, snow, and ice, leading to significantly reduced visibility and potentially dangerous conditions. Paths can become boggy and frozen. Only experienced and well-equipped hikers with appropriate winter gear and navigation skills should attempt to visit during these months. A fence line can assist navigation in bad conditions, but caution is paramount.
