Vandring
From the 15th to the 19th century, a lot of transport on the Maas was provided by barges. In certain places the fairway changed banks. The hunters and horses, who pulled the barges along a towpath, then also had to change banks, which was done by wading and swimming.
A road cross was installed at such places. This could be provided with a sacrificial block. The skipper put a few coins in here. The local priest emptied the offering block and, in return, celebrated mass at regular intervals for the safety of the boatmen.
