The house was named after its builder, Johann Joseph Spiess. He was a former officer in the bodyguards of King Louis XVI of France and was employed under Napoleon in Erkelenz as domain administrator and tax collector for the cantons of Erkelenz and Odenkirchen in the arrondissement of Krefeld.

The buildings were constructed in 1806 in the style of the Aachen builder Couven.
The client was Johann Joseph Spiess from Colmar.
The French tax authorities appointed him in 1798 to collect the indirect taxes and administrate the national domains in the canton of Erkelenz.
The house was badly damaged in World War II.
The city of Erkelenz acquired Haus Spiess on January 17, 1978. Today, among other things, the registry office of the city of Erkelenz is located here
