In the early hours of the Battle of Waterloo, the French attacked the far right of the Allies, mainly through the forests of Hougoumont. They tried to create a diversion to force Wellington to vacate his center. What was initially intended only as a diversionary maneuver became the most violent scene of the battle.

When did the Battle of Hougoumont begin?

At 11.30, after a massive artillery bombardment - partly offset by Wellington's position and the wet ground - Napoleon launched his diversionary attack on Hougoumont. The French cleared the wood in front of the castle but were shot down as they left their shelter.
