    Vandring

Wandope, at 2,533 feet (772 m) is a Wainwright fell that isn't often hiked alone. It can be approached from Whiteless Pike (from Buttermere) or as part of a loop including Crag Hill/Sail or Grasmoor which are all very close by. It can be reached from the Vale of Lorton in a day walk, or from the north (as an extension to the Coledale Horseshoe). So many choices!

    Vandring

Wandope is easily bagged with a short detour being a little off the path that runs from Hopegill Head to Whiteless Pike. Nice views down over Knott Rigg and it is also a UK designated Nuttall.

What are the most popular starting points for hiking to Wandope Summit?

Many hikers begin their ascent from the village of Buttermere. From there, common approaches include following Sail Beck and Third Gill, or taking the ridge along the southern rim of Addacomb Hole. Another popular option is to incorporate Wandope into a longer traverse, often connecting from Whiteless Pike or as part of a loop including Crag Hill, Sail, or Grasmoor.

Is Wandope Summit suitable for beginner hikers?

Wandope Summit is generally considered suitable for intermediate hikers due to varied terrain and significant elevation gain. While there are no specific 'beginner-friendly' trails directly to the summit, those with some hiking experience and proper preparation can enjoy the ascent. It's often part of longer, more challenging routes.

How long does it typically take to hike to Wandope Summit?

The duration of a hike to Wandope Summit varies significantly based on the chosen route, starting point, and individual fitness levels. If incorporated into a longer circular walk from Buttermere, including other fells, a full day (5-8 hours) is common. A direct ascent and descent might take 3-5 hours, depending on the path and pace.

What unique geological features can be seen near Wandope Summit?

A striking geological feature near Wandope is Addacomb Hole, a symmetrical hanging valley resembling a half-crater with a high headwall. The summit area itself consists of Ordovician Kirkstile Formation mudstone and siltstone, with Greywacke sandstone turbidites beneath, and the Causey Pike Fault running across its southern flanks.

Are there any specific viewpoints or photography spots on the way to Wandope Summit?

While the summit itself offers glorious panoramic views of the Scafell and High Stile ranges, the ridge extending southwest from Wandope, particularly the Whiteless Edge, provides fine, airy vistas. Views down over Knott Rigg are also highly regarded by hikers. Addacomb Hole offers a unique photographic subject due to its distinctive shape.

Is Wandope Summit accessible during winter, and what conditions should I expect?

Wandope Summit can be accessed during winter by experienced hikers, but conditions can be challenging. Expect snow and ice, especially at higher elevations, and potentially strong winds. Proper winter hiking gear, including crampons, ice axe, and excellent navigation skills, are essential. Always check the weather forecast before attempting a winter ascent.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options near Wandope Summit?

Wandope Summit itself is remote, with no facilities. However, the nearby village of Buttermere offers several options for cafes, pubs, and accommodation. Other villages in the wider Lake District area, such as those accessible from the Vale of Lorton or Newlands Pass, also provide amenities for visitors.

Is Wandope Summit a dog-friendly hiking destination?

Yes, Wandope Summit and its surrounding trails are generally dog-friendly. However, dogs should be kept under close control, especially near livestock, and on leads in certain areas. Be prepared for varied terrain, including rocky sections, and ensure your dog is fit enough for the hike. Always carry water for your dog.

How crowded does Wandope Summit get compared to other Lake District fells?

Wandope Summit is often described as being less crowded than its more prominent neighbors like Grasmoor and Crag Hill. This makes it an excellent choice for hikers seeking a more peaceful and tranquil experience amidst grand scenery, even during peak seasons. You're more likely to find solitude here than on some of the more famous Lakeland peaks.

What is the elevation of Wandope Summit and how does it compare to nearby fells?

Wandope Summit stands at an elevation of 772 meters (2,533 feet). It is part of the North Western Fells and is considered a 'child summit' of Grasmoor, which is higher at 852 meters (2,795 feet). Crag Hill, another nearby fell, is also higher at 839 meters (2,753 feet). Despite being lower than its immediate neighbors, Wandope offers distinct and rewarding views.

Are there any permits required to hike Wandope Summit?
