In the late Middle Ages, the Aa was dammed up to power a mill. The Königsmühle is mentioned for the first time in 1366. The pure grain mill probably stood on the southern edge of today's Aa lake.

The Königsmühle was first mentioned in 1366. At that time it was still a pure grain mill and was probably located on the southern edge of today's Aasee.
It was rebuilt in the 18th century and later expanded several times. In addition to its function as a grain mill, it later also served as a tanning and fulling mill, thus contributing to the prosperity of the textile industry. The Bocholter Aa was dammed to power the mill and its course was probably even slightly changed.
