Vandring

Together with the IJzermonding and the Zwin, the Krakeelduinen are part of the Natura 2000 area Dune Areas. After WWII the dunes were used as a water extraction area, but nowadays the dune area is being restored to its natural glory. You will now find Scottish Blackface sheep grazing the area and since the concrete has been removed the sand can flow freely again.

The Krakeelduinen are a nature reserve in the West Flemish municipality of De Panne, part of the Natura 2000 area Dune areas including IJzermonding and Zwin.

This is an area that is adjacent to the Calmeynbos and that came into use as a water extraction area after the Second World War. This ended in 2009 so that the area could become wetter again. There is a grazing area of 20 hectares, on which Scottish Blackface sheep graze. Concrete lanes were removed, allowing the sand to drift again. A parabolic dune was restored.
