On 1 May 1945, women from the Ravensbrück concentration camp, Barth satellite camp, reached the market place of Ribnitz on their "death march". The Ribnitz city commander prepared the shooting of the women so shortly before the end of the war. However, citizens of Ribnitz prevented this massacre. A commemorative plaque at the entrance of the town hall reminds of it.
