A majestic view over the Chiemgauer Land and the Chiemsee. The world is at your feet. A real reward for a climb (without cable car)

Beautiful, but long and varied round trip. The summit is not too high, yet it offers a fantastic view. Even with a little snow to go well.

With a height of 1,748 meters, the Hochgern is an ingenious panoramic peak on the edge of the Chiemgau Alps. You can climb it on easy paths and let yourself be pampered on one of the alpine pastures as a reward.

The Chiemsee is almost at your feet on the summit of the Hochgern. When the weather is good, the view is fantastic - whether over the flat land or in the surrounding mountain ranges such as the Kaiser Mountains.

Another well-used route begins from Au (Unterwössen), which is slightly steeper but can be 10-20 minutes shorter than the Marquartstein route. For a more challenging experience, the route from Staudach-Egerndach through a romantic valley and forest section involves a narrow, partially rocky, and slippery path through the north flank, requiring sure-footedness. A less-trafficked but very scenic route starts from Bergen (Kohlstatt), passing the Weiße Achen and Eschelmoos, then over a rocky path to the Bischofsfellnalm, requiring sure-footedness and a head for heights on the final 100 meters.

Is the Hochgern Summit Cross hike suitable for families with children or dogs?

Yes, the Hochgern Summit Cross can be suitable for families and dogs, especially on the easier routes. The path from Marquartstein via the Agergschwendtalm and Hochgernhaus is generally considered family-friendly due to its well-maintained nature. For dogs, ensure they are accustomed to longer hikes and that you bring enough water, especially on warmer days, as some sections can be exposed. Always keep dogs on a leash, particularly near grazing animals and other hikers.

Parking is available at the trailheads in Marquartstein, Unterwössen (Au), Staudach-Egerndach, and Bergen (Kohlstatt). Parking areas can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during peak season, so arriving early is highly recommended. While specific public transport details are not always readily available for every trailhead, regional bus services often connect the surrounding villages like Marquartstein, Unterwössen, and Staudach-Egerndach, which could provide access to some starting points. It's advisable to check local bus schedules for the Chiemgau region.

What are the typical durations for the different hiking routes to the Hochgern Summit Cross?

The Hochgernhaus is open year-round. However, winter conditions can be challenging; proper gear (snowshoes, microspikes, avalanche equipment for ski touring) and checking current weather and snow reports are essential. Some sections, especially the final ascent to the summit cross, can become more demanding with significant snow.

Are there mountain huts or places to eat and stay near the Hochgern Summit Cross?
