Schwerin is divided into several districts. The so-called Old Town (Altstadt) is located around Schwerin Cathedral and is the historic core. Settlement dates back a long way, and ancient traces can still be seen today. Schwerin Cathedral and the area around the market square are worth seeing.

Schwerin Castle is an absolute highlight with a long history. In 1160, the Wendish prince Niklot burned the Slavic fortress and withdrew. Henry the Lion rebuilt it, laying the foundation for the present-day city of Schwerin.

The castle now houses the state parliament and a museum.
