Ferdinand Traugott Flinsch introduced mechanical papermaking in Blankenberg in 1843. Parchment paper and printing paper were still produced in this Thuringian town on the Saale River until 1993. Today, you can learn more about that era in a museum.

As soon as you cross the bridge over the Saale River, you leave Thuringia and enter Bavaria on the other bank.

The Saale bridge at the Blankenberger paper factory was built in the 19th century for city traffic and rail operations for the works railway. 1945 the bridge destroyed by the German Wehrmacht, the wooden construction for agricultural vehicles during the occupation was destroyed in 1952 by the GDR authorities. The bridge for pedestrians and cyclists was only rebuilt in 1992, partly with the original steel structure, and was completely renovated in 2009.
