On a hilltop plateau at the edge of the Judean Desert in Israel, high above the Dead Sea, lies the archaeological site "Masada", a royal retreat of Herod, which he conquered around 15 BC. had built.

Fortress built by Herod and retreat for Israeli rebels, which was besieged and occupied by the Romans in 73 AD. Especially recommended are the Nordfeste and the southern cistern. Very good to visit at sunrise, as the exposed location offers a magnificent view over the dead sea towards Jordan. If you come from the direction of Arad, you can park at the campsite, which opens "at sunrise". With us this was in January 06:00 in the morning. The short ascent to the plateau then takes about fifteen minutes.
