Witzenhausen is relatively small, but still worth a stop. In the old town are many beautiful half-timbered houses, which make a great backdrop for a little break. If you come here in July, you can visit the Kesperkirmes (Kesper = Cherry) and watch with a bit of luck, the choice of the Cherry Queen. The cherry has tradition here - the area around Witzenhausen is considered the largest closed cherry growing area in Europe.

An old town like a picture book - no wonder that the region of Northern Hesse also bears the name "Grimmheimat". If you stroll between the half-timbered houses, you can easily think back to the days of the Brothers Grimm.

Around the picturesque market square you will find several restaurants, cafes and shops.

The cherry and university town of Witzenhausen is beautifully nestled in the romantic Werra Valley and is the center of one of the largest and oldest cherry growing regions in Germany.
The attractive old town with its valuable half-timbered buildings is evidence of medieval culture and architecture. In Witzenhausen it has been possible to preserve the old and open up to the new. The smallest university town in Germany is home to the University of Kassel with the Department of Organic Agricultural Sciences, the first of its kind in Europe.
