The Vier- und Marschlande are also called the three-river land of Hamburg. In addition to the Gose and Dove Elbe, the Bille, which flows from the Duchy of Lauenburg into the North Elbe, also meanders through this fertile area that has supplied Hamburg with fresh fruit and vegetables, milk and meat products for centuries. Before there was a rail connection, these waterways were also the most important transport routes into the city.

Behind the Reitschleuse, which is no longer used to regulate the water level, the Gose Elbe is navigable for a short stretch with motor boats before it flows about 500 meters into the Dove Elbe, which is widened like a sea here (as a regatta course).
