When you first see the heart of the lake, you will soon realize where the name comes from. The small mountain lake lies in a barren valley directly below the Hochjoch. The lake drains over the Teufelsbach, which, after a long way down into the valley, flows into the Litz.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

What is the best way to reach Herzsee, and are there parking facilities?

Access to Herzsee primarily involves using mountain lifts, such as the Hochjochbahn, followed by a hike. While specific parking for Herzsee itself isn't available at the lake, you'll find parking at the valley stations of the mountain lifts that provide access to the hiking trails leading to the lake. It's advisable to check the operating times of the lifts and plan your ascent and descent accordingly.

Is Herzsee suitable for family-friendly hikes or those with dogs?

Yes, Herzsee can be part of family-friendly hikes, especially if you utilize the mountain lifts to shorten the ascent. There are routes of varying difficulty, so families can choose paths that suit their children's abilities. Dogs are generally welcome on trails in the Montafon region, but they should be kept on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or wildlife. Always ensure your dog is accustomed to mountain terrain and carry enough water for them.

Are there any easy hiking routes to Herzsee?

While Herzsee is located at a high altitude (2221 meters), making any direct ascent a significant undertaking, you can make the hike easier by taking the Hochjochbahn lift. From the top station, there are well-maintained trails that lead to the lake, offering a more moderate hiking experience compared to starting from the valley floor. These routes still involve some elevation gain and rocky terrain, so sturdy footwear is essential.

    Can you swim in Herzsee?

Herzsee is a high-alpine mountain lake, and while its clear waters might be inviting, it is primarily a natural feature for viewing and hiking. The water temperature is typically very cold, even in summer, making it unsuitable for comfortable swimming. It's best enjoyed for its scenic beauty and as a refreshing stop during a hike.

What is the terrain and difficulty like for hiking around Herzsee?

The terrain around Herzsee is characteristic of a high-alpine environment: rugged, rocky, and uneven. Hikers should expect paths that can be steep in places, with loose scree or gravel. The overall difficulty can range from intermediate to challenging, depending on the chosen route and starting point. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are highly recommended.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options near Herzsee?

Herzsee itself is in a remote, high-alpine setting, so there are no direct cafes, restaurants, or accommodation facilities right at the lake. However, you will find mountain huts (like the Kapellalpe or Wormser Hütte) and restaurants near the mountain lift stations (e.g., Hochjochbahn) that offer refreshments and meals. For accommodation, you'll need to descend to the nearby villages in the Montafon valley, such as Schruns or St. Gallenkirch.

Is Herzsee accessible by public transport?

While Herzsee itself is not directly accessible by public transport, the Montafon valley is well-served by buses that connect to the valley stations of the mountain lifts. For example, you can take a bus to Schruns and then connect to the Hochjochbahn. It's advisable to check local bus schedules and lift operating times when planning your trip.

What makes Herzsee unique compared to other lakes in the region?

Herzsee stands out primarily due to its distinctive heart-like shape, which is particularly evident from certain viewpoints above the lake. This unique natural feature, combined with its pristine high-alpine setting directly below the Hochjoch, makes it a memorable destination. It offers a tranquil escape and stunning panoramic views that are characteristic of the Silvretta-Rätikon Alps.

Can you visit Herzsee during winter for hiking?

Winter hiking to Herzsee is generally not recommended for the average visitor due to its high-alpine location (2221 meters). The area is typically covered in deep snow, making trails impassable and increasing avalanche risk. Access roads and lifts may also be closed or operate for winter sports only. It's best to visit during the warmer months when trails are clear and safe.

What are some notable viewpoints or landmarks around Herzsee?

The most notable feature is the lake itself, especially when viewed from an elevated position where its heart shape becomes apparent. The surrounding peaks of the Hochjoch area provide dramatic backdrops and numerous viewpoints. Hikers often find the best perspectives by ascending slightly above the lake on the trails leading towards the Hochjoch summit or other surrounding ridges.

How long does it typically take to hike to Herzsee?

The hiking time to Herzsee varies significantly depending on your starting point and chosen route. If you utilize the Hochjochbahn lift, the hike from the top station to Herzsee can take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours one way, depending on your pace and the specific path. Starting from the valley floor would involve a much longer and more strenuous full-day hike.
