The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Nikola in the district of the same name is the oldest church in the city of Landshut north of the Isar. It is a three-aisled hall church. In 1967, a new building was built in a central design, which has been the center of the parish ever since and is still the youngest church building in Landshut (New St. Nikola). The patron of both church buildings is Saint Nicholas of Myra (patron saint December 6).

In place of a Romanesque predecessor, remnants of whose walls are incorporated into the present-day chancel, a Gothic church was built in the 14th century. The foundations of the chancel and the chancel-flanking tower are still preserved from this earlier structure. These foundations have been dated to 1389/90 using dendrochronological analysis. After 1475, Old St. Nicholas Church acquired its present form through the raising of the chancel and the construction of a new nave.
