Salzburg's Makartplatz tells the city's history in a small space. Mozart and Doppler once lived here; today, the State Theater, Mozart's residence, and the Baroque Trinity Church face each other. Named after the painter Hans Makart, the square has been redesigned several times over the centuries and has had various names. Tony Cragg's Caldera sculpture has stood in its center since 2008; its flowing forms provide an exciting contrast to the austere architecture of the square.

The Makartplatz is conveniently located for arrival and departure with regional buses and the Getreidegasse in the old town can be reached quickly on foot via the Marko-Feingold-Steg. At Makartplatz, for example, you can board the regional bus 180 to Bad Reichenhall.

The Makartplatz was named after the Salzburg painter Hans Makart, the "painter prince" of the Vienna Ringstraßenära. The house No. 8 is the residence of the Mozart family. The conclusion of the square forms the Trinity Church, the most important sacral building right of the Salzach of the Baroque master builder J.B. Fischer von Erlach. On the opposite side are the Landestheater and the main entrance to the famous Mirabell Gardens.
