The history of the Arco da Rua Augusta begins in 1755, with the devastating earthquake that destroyed a large part of Lisbon's buildings. It was then that it was decided to raise this arch as a symbol of the reconstruction of the city, which was beginning a new architectural stage at the hands of the Marquis of Pombal.
