Along with the pyramids of Giza, it is the highlight of every trip to Egypt and the destination of millions of visitors every year: the great temple city of Karnak. In fact, the ruins of Karnak, two kilometers north of Luxor, are much more than just the remains of a temple. It is a huge complex of many different temples and cult facilities that are related to each other. The religious heart of Egypt beat here for many centuries. Karnak was the main place of worship of the empire god Amun-Re and the largest sanctuary in the entire empire.
