The fountain was inaugurated on September 30, 1978 at the end (or beginning) of the Werth. He had emerged as the winner of the competition of eleven artists and was selected by the city's art commission. It was designed and created by the Düsseldorf sculptor Friedrich Werthmann.

On September 30, 1978, the fountain was officially inaugurated by Mayor Gottfried Gurland. The fountain was the winner in a competition between eleven artists and was selected by the art commission of the city of Wuppertal. It was designed and built by the Düsseldorf sculptor Friedrich Werthmann (1927-2018). When the Astropfad Wuppertal was set up in 1988, the fountain served as the sun and thus as the center for the planets in the solar system
