    Vandring

Robin Hood’s Cave is a fantastic little cave tucked into the landscape. Small and well-sheltered, legend has it that infamous outlaw Robin Hood took refuge here when he was on-the-run. To find the cave, you need to follow a rocky trail down the cliff face. Whilst this section is manageable, do take care. Once inside the cave, you will find it to be a lovely spot for a picnic or a flask of tea—especially in wintry weather.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

What is the typical terrain like on trails leading to Robin Hood's Cave?

The trails around Robin Hood's Cave, particularly along Stanage Edge, feature varied terrain. You'll encounter gritstone paths, rocky sections, and sometimes boggy ground, especially after rain. The final approach to the cave involves a rocky scramble down the cliff face. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support and grip are highly recommended.

Are there any specific landmarks or viewpoints near Robin Hood's Cave worth visiting?

Absolutely! Robin Hood's Cave itself offers a fantastic viewpoint over the Hope Valley. Beyond the cave, the entire Stanage Edge provides numerous dramatic gritstone formations and panoramic vistas. Popular spots include the trig point at the highest part of Stanage Edge and various climbing crags. The nearby village of Hathersage, with its literary connections, is also a charming landmark.

What are the best parking options for visiting Robin Hood's Cave?

Parking is available at several lay-bys and small car parks along the A57 (Snake Pass) and the minor road that runs parallel to Stanage Edge. Popular spots include the Hooks Car Park and the lay-bys near Dennis Knoll. Be aware that these can fill up very quickly, especially on weekends and during peak season. Arriving early in the morning is advisable to secure a spot.

Is public transport available to reach Stanage Edge and Robin Hood's Cave?

Yes, public transport can get you close. Buses run from Sheffield to Hathersage, which is a good starting point for walks to Stanage Edge. From Hathersage, it's a significant uphill walk to reach the Stanage Edge trails. There are also some local bus services that run closer to the edge, but these are less frequent. Checking local bus timetables in advance is recommended.

Do I need any permits to hike to Robin Hood's Cave or in the Peak District area?

No, you do not need any specific permits to hike to Robin Hood's Cave or generally within the open access land of the Peak District National Park. However, always follow the Countryside Code, respect private land, and be mindful of any local signage regarding access or conservation efforts.

How long does it typically take to hike to Robin Hood's Cave?

The time it takes to reach Robin Hood's Cave depends heavily on your starting point and pace. From the nearest parking areas along Stanage Edge, a direct route might take 30-60 minutes one way, involving some scrambling. If you're starting from Hathersage or incorporating it into a longer circular walk around Stanage Edge, the total hike could range from 2 to 4 hours or more.

Are there any family-friendly walking routes that include or are near Robin Hood's Cave?

While the immediate approach to Robin Hood's Cave involves a rocky scramble that might be challenging for very young children or those with mobility issues, there are many family-friendly walks along Stanage Edge. You can enjoy the wider, flatter paths along the top of the edge with stunning views, and then decide if the final descent to the cave is suitable for your family. Many circular routes from nearby villages like Hathersage offer gentler options.

Is Robin Hood's Cave and the surrounding trails dog-friendly?

Yes, the trails around Robin Hood's Cave and Stanage Edge are generally dog-friendly. Many hikers bring their dogs. However, please keep dogs on a lead, especially near livestock (sheep are common) and during bird nesting season (March-July). The rocky scramble down to the cave might require some assistance for smaller or less agile dogs.

Are there cafes, pubs, or accommodation options near Robin Hood's Cave?

While there are no facilities directly at Robin Hood's Cave or on Stanage Edge itself, the nearby villages offer excellent options. Hathersage, just a short drive or longer walk away, has several pubs, cafes, and accommodation choices including B&Bs and hotels. Other nearby villages like Grindleford also provide amenities for visitors.

What should I bring for a visit to Robin Hood's Cave and Stanage Edge?

Given the exposed nature of Stanage Edge and the rocky approach to the cave, essential items include: sturdy hiking boots with good grip, layers of clothing (even in summer, as weather can change quickly), waterproofs, a map and compass or GPS device, plenty of water, snacks, and a headlamp or torch if exploring inside the cave. Sun protection is also important on sunny days.

Are there any less crowded alternatives to Robin Hood's Cave for similar views or experiences?

Stanage Edge is a popular spot, but you can find quieter areas by exploring other parts of the gritstone edges in the Peak District. Consider visiting Burbage Edge or Derwent Edge for similar dramatic landscapes and views, which often see fewer visitors than the main sections of Stanage. These areas also offer excellent hiking opportunities and natural features.

What are the opening hours for Robin Hood's Cave?

Robin Hood's Cave is a natural feature on open access land and does not have official opening or closing hours. It is accessible 24/7. However, it is strongly recommended to visit during daylight hours for safety, especially given the rocky and potentially challenging approach to the cave. Always check weather conditions before heading out.
