Inverness Castle overlooks the River Ness from a sandstone cliff and affords fine views over the ancient and picturesque city of Inverness. The castle’s position, bridging the mouth of the river as it enters the Moray Firth, has ensured its place at the centre of political, religious and mercantile life in the Highlands for the best part of two millennia. The site is free to explore during daylight hours. There is a viewpoint that you can pay more to see, though.

In 1836, the architect William Burn built the red sandstone building on the site of an 11th-century fortress. Today it houses the Sheriff Court of Inverness. For many centuries there was a castle on this site. The castle itself is currently not open to the public, but an initiative has recently led to the creation of a working group to examine the extent to which this will be possible in the future. In April 2017, the North Tower was opened to the public as a vantage point. Currently, only this tower and the castle grounds can be visited
