The Berlin city wall was a structure in the Middle Ages that was built around what was then the double city of Berlin-Kölln, including several city gates in the passages. There are still remains of the old city wall between Littenstrasse and Waisenstrasse. They were saved from grinding because they served as the perimeter walls of dwellings. In 1948 the remains of the wall were secured and placed under monument protection. Source: Wiki
