At 1,058 feet, Champlain is the seventh tallest mountain in the park and offers panoramic views of the easternmost third of Mount Desert Island. Champlain was originally dubbed Newport Mountain, but its name was changed to honor French explorer Samuel de Champlain. Similar changes occurred throughout the park in the early twentieth century due to the Colonial Revival movement.and to show solidarity with the French during WWI.
