However, it's less about standing out at all costs or wearing flashy hats, as is the case at the horse races in Ascot, England. There, the meticulously manicured lawn around the racetrack becomes a catwalk. The catwalk in Hooksiel is reserved solely for the horses and the spectators in the "dike" grandstand, which offers the best view of the action.

On February 18, 1981, a small group of equestrian enthusiasts met to found the Hooksiel Racing Club (Hooksieler Rennverein e.V.). The idea of establishing a racing club had been brewing in the minds of the founding members for over ten years and was now realized with great enthusiasm and idealism. Dr. Karl-Heinz Gaede, a veterinarian and passionate equestrian from Hooksiel, became the first chairman.
