The church measures approximately 20 x 45 meters, is 19.65 meters high, has a Latin cross plan with three naves and is entirely made of bricks. The project was entirely inspired by the ancient city cathedral both in structure and style and in size.

The original church and monastery dedicated to St. John the Baptist arose in the territory of Equilio (later Jesolo) at the beginning of the 12th century at the behest of the doge Ordelafo Falier. In the 13th century, the small church of St. John the Baptist probably served as a baptistery for the nearby cathedral of Santa Maria, which no longer exists.
In 1466, the church passed to the Patriarchate of Venice following the suppression of the diocese of Equilio, to which it originally belonged.
