The castle was first mentioned under the name "Formicaria" in 945. In the 12th century, it was renamed Firmian until around 1473, when it was purchased by Duke Sigmund the Rich, the sovereign of Tyrol. He transformed the castle into a fortress and named it Sigmundskron Castle. When he encountered financial difficulties and mortgaged the castle, it fell into disrepair. Over the years, the semi-ruin changed hands several times, was restored, and used as a guesthouse before being acquired by the Province of South Tyrol in 1996.

Sigmundskron Castle is one of the castles in South Tyrol that Reinhold Messner bought and converted into museums. The entrance fee is € 12.00, but it is worth it. There is an exhibition on the history of mountaineering and items that he has acquired during his travels. Especially beautiful is the labyrinth, with crystals in a mountain cave.
