(44)

The Meeraugen Lakes are a pair of distinctive, shallow glacial cirque lakes nestled high on the Saualpe mountain range in Carinthia, Austria. Situated at an elevation of 1994 meters, these natural monuments offer a unique glimpse into the region's Ice Age past. While the name "Meeraugen" (Sea Eyes) is also associated with a more widely known lake in the Bodental valley, these specific Meeraugen Lakes on the Saualpe are notable for their high-alpine setting and unique geological characteristics.

    Vandring

The people of the Lavant valley once assumed that the small lakes should have a connection to the Wörthersee or even to the sea. According to legend, a horse-drawn cart that was traveling up here in the mountains disappeared in the lakes and then reappeared unscathed at Lake Wörthersee.

What is the difference between the Meeraugen Lakes on the Saualpe and the Meerauge in Bodental?

The term "Meeraugen Lakes" typically refers to two distinct natural water bodies. The ones on the Saualpe, which this page focuses on, are a pair of shallow glacial cirque lakes located at a high altitude of 1935 meters. They are known for their unique geological formation and high-alpine setting. In contrast, the Meerauge in Bodental is a single, more widely known mountain lake in the Bodental valley, famous for its emerald green water and constant temperature, rarely freezing even in winter. Both are beautiful, but offer different experiences and are located in different parts of Carinthia.

Are the Meeraugen Lakes on the Saualpe suitable for a winter hike?

While the Meeraugen Lakes are generally best visited during warmer months when trails are clear of snow, winter hiking is possible for experienced hikers. However, due to their high elevation (1935 meters) and alpine terrain, winter conditions can be challenging. It's crucial to check the weather forecast, trail conditions, and potential avalanche warnings, and to be equipped with appropriate winter gear. The lakes themselves may be frozen or covered in snow, offering a different, stark beauty.

What is the typical hiking difficulty to reach the Meeraugen Lakes?

The hike to the Meeraugen Lakes is generally considered to be of intermediate difficulty. The terrain involves mountain roads and trails on the Saualpe, which can be steep in sections. Hikers should be prepared for ascents and descents, and the high altitude requires a reasonable level of fitness. There are various routes, some offering a more challenging experience, while others might be more moderate. Always check specific route details before setting out.

How long does it take to hike to the Meeraugen Lakes?

The duration of a hike to the Meeraugen Lakes depends significantly on your starting point and chosen route. For example, coming from Klippitztörl, you might embark on a longer trek along the ridge towards Wolfsberger Hütte or Diex, which could take several hours. Shorter approaches might be available from closer parking areas. It's advisable to consult detailed trail maps and plan for at least a half-day excursion, allowing time to enjoy the scenery.

Is there parking available near the Meeraugen Lakes?

Access to the Meeraugen Lakes is typically via mountain roads on the Saualpe. While there isn't direct parking right at the lakes due to their remote, high-alpine location, there are usually designated parking areas at trailheads or mountain huts further down the mountain, such as near Klippitztörl or other access points to the Saualpe. From these points, you would then continue on foot. It's recommended to research specific starting points and parking options for your chosen route.

Are the Meeraugen Lakes and surrounding trails family-friendly?

The Meeraugen Lakes themselves are a beautiful natural sight, but the hike to reach them, given the intermediate difficulty and high-alpine terrain, might be challenging for very young children or families not accustomed to mountain hiking. However, older children with hiking experience and good stamina should enjoy the adventure. There are likely shorter, less strenuous trails in the broader Saualpe region that could be more suitable for families seeking a gentler experience.

Are dogs allowed on the trails around Meeraugen Lakes?

Generally, dogs are welcome on hiking trails in the Austrian Alps, including those around the Meeraugen Lakes. However, it is crucial to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas with grazing livestock or wildlife, and to clean up after them. Always ensure your dog is fit enough for the hike and carry enough water for both yourself and your pet, as water sources might be limited on the high-alpine terrain.

What kind of wildlife can be observed around the Meeraugen Lakes?

The high-alpine environment around the Meeraugen Lakes is home to various species adapted to this unique habitat. Hikers might spot birds of prey soaring overhead, marmots, or even chamois on the higher slopes. The shallow waters and surrounding meadows also support specific insect life and alpine flora. Keep an eye out for the Alpine salamander, which is known to inhabit such regions.

Are there any cafes or accommodation options near the Meeraugen Lakes?

The Meeraugen Lakes are located in a remote, high-alpine setting on the Saualpe, so there are no direct cafes or accommodation facilities right at the lakes. However, mountain huts (like the Wolfsberger Hütte or Ladinger Hütte, mentioned as points along the ridge) often provide refreshments and sometimes overnight stays. These huts are typically reached after a hike. For more extensive accommodation and dining options, you would need to descend to nearby villages or towns in the region.

What are the best viewpoints or natural features to look out for on a hike to the Meeraugen Lakes?

Beyond the captivating "eye-shaped" Meeraugen Lakes themselves, the entire Saualpe region offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Carinthian landscape. As you hike along the ridge, you'll encounter vast alpine meadows and potentially distant mountain ranges. The unique geological formations, remnants of glacial activity, are also a highlight. Keep an eye out for the diverse alpine flora that thrives in this high-altitude environment.
