The Heckedotz Fountain commemorates the historical practice of the 'Heckedetz' – the people of Treis who engaged in slash-and-burn agriculture on the slopes of the Mosel valley. The bronze sculpture of the mischievous boy depicts him stripping bark from an oak branch, symbolizing this traditional work that shaped the region's landscape and economy.
The central bronze sculpture of the 'Heckedotz' was created by the Koblenz sculptor Fritz Berlin. The octagonal fountain basin and the accompanying basalt reliefs were crafted by Gerhard Zenzen from Ulmen, based on designs by Heinrich Sausen from Treis. The fountain was inaugurated on April 30, 1989, with the sculpture added on November 11, 1989.
