The Gila River Trailhead serves as a gateway to the extensive and historically significant Gila River, a major tributary of the Colorado River that flows through New Mexico and Arizona. While not a single point, this trailhead represents various access points to trails that follow the river, particularly notable for its role in the Gila Wilderness, the world's first federally designated wilderness area. At an elevation of approximately 535 meters, this specific access point offers an introduction to the river's…

This trailhead is special in at least two ways: it is your first encounter with the Gila River that will accompany you for quite some time along the Arizona Trail. There is also a very nice service offered by Old Time Pizza that is based in Kearny, the most hikerfriendly town on Earth. Call +1 520-363-5523 and get a pizza delivered to the trailhead. What a great idea! I put of photo of the menu here.

Otherwise, it's also worth hitchhiking to Kearny. In addition to the pizzeria, there is a supermarket, a hotel and a laundry.

In addition to Bandit's comments above, Gary has also been known to pick up and ferry people to Kearny and back if you don't want to peddle the six miles into town. That being said, don't count on it as he may be busy, but it's a nice ride if you can get it.
