Unfortunately, only the tower of the church, which is just over 80 m high, has been preserved. The nave was heavily destroyed in World War II, and demolished in 1960. It was one of the highest church in Wismar, with a height of over 32 m in the nave. Today you can still see the outlines.

The current St. Mary's Church was built in the early 14th century. However, a church building had already been built 100 years earlier.
The church was badly damaged in the last air raid in April 1945 and was demolished in 1960. Only the 80-meter-high tower remained. The entire site now serves as a memorial against war.

The imposing sacred building belongs to one of the 3 main churches in Wismar, as well as St. Nikolai and St. Georgen churches. The late Gothic hall church was built near the market square at the beginning of the 13th century. In the 15th century it was then extended by two side halls.
The church was badly damaged in World War II. In 1960, by resolution of the then city council, the damaged nave was blown up, so that today only the 80 m high west tower remains.
