The casemates, created by the Prussians as accommodation for soldiers and horses in case of defense, form the "longest bar in Saarland". One of the most important cultural institutions in the state, the Saarland Institute for Contemporary Art, is housed in a former powder store.

The casemates in Saarlouis are a fascinating historical structure and part of the city's former fortifications. These underground passages and rooms are a relic from the time when Saarlouis was built as a fortress town under French rule in the 17th century.
