A key feature of the "Cristo Rei" depictions is that Jesus is not shown on the cross or crucified (although the outstretched arms suggest this from afar), but rather Christ is the King, the Victor over sin and death, the All overcome the suffering of the world. It is the outstretched arms of the lovingly drawing Christ, with which he embraces the country and above all the people living in it in blessing.

Good vantage point, from the free gravel parking lot there is a beautiful path to the Christ statue. We recommend the path all the way down to the top of the coast, from below you have a great view of Funchal and up to the statue.
