The Windsborn crater lake is almost circular and is completely surrounded by a 20-30 meter high rampart. This quiet place is ideal for a breather and for a short break, because here is usually not much going on. The best thing is to round the crater lake - it's only a few hundred meters.

What makes the Windsborn Crater Lake geologically unique compared to other Eifel lakes?

The Windsborn Crater Lake is exceptional because it is the only permanently water-filled crater lake north of the Alps that is not a maar. Unlike maars, which form from explosive eruptions when magma hits groundwater, Windsborn developed within the eruption crater of a volcanic mountain, specifically a cinder cone, approximately 80,000 years ago. This makes its formation and structure distinct within the Volcanic Eifel region.

Are there specific hiking trails recommended for families with children around Windsborn Krater Gipfel?

Yes, the path directly around the crater lake is relatively short and easy, making it suitable for families. It's only a few hundred meters to round the lake. For a slightly longer, yet still family-friendly option, the small forest path leading from the main parking areas (Hinkelsmaar/Kratersee) to the lake is about 700 meters long and offers a pleasant walk through nature.

What are the rules regarding dogs on the trails around Windsborn Krater Gipfel?
