From 1700 to 1710 Minheim was ravaged by the plague and badly hit. The believers sought refuge in prayer and asked the plague saints Sebastian and Rochus for help. Out of gratitude that they were spared the disease, the surviving citizens built a “plague chapel”. In 1966, however, it was torn down and replaced in 1989 by today's plague chapel.

The plague chapel is a "replacement chapel" for the original chapel, which was built in 1610 by the survivors of Piesport on the outskirts of Piesport in the direction of Klausen. In 1966 it had to give way to the construction of the new district road; the replacement chapel was built twenty years later on the heights of the Moselle loop in Piesport.
